Moving from an exchange to a self custody wallet like MEW

What to know about holding assets in self custody vs a crypto exchange

Written by Brittany Acosta

MEW is a self custody wallet, which means that users have full control and custody of their own funds.

Unlike an exchange, MEW doesn't collect your personal information, doesn't have access to your crypto, can't freeze your accounts or prevent your transactions, and can't lose or steal your assets because it doesn't hold them to begin with. Even if MEW shuts down, you will still have access to your funds by restoring your wallet in another self custody app.

On the other hand, with a self custody wallet, users are responsible for the security of their assets. MEW can't recover lost keys or passwords, can't reverse or refund transactions, can't adjust or fix balances, and can't recover phished funds.
